Local History: Getting Started

Welcome!

This guide provides help for locating information, both in the Sheridan Library and on the web, about local history from the cities and regions surrounding Sheridan College campuses in Oakville, Brampton, and Mississauga.

In this Guide:

Encyclopedias and biographies are excellent places to discover background information about the people and places you are studying. Like Wikipedia, but more academically acceptable.

Books provide comprehensive overviews and discussions on broad topics. Major Canadian events, and writings from Canadian authors, are covered through the following collections.

Historical newspapers are an important source for understanding the key events and political discussions taking place during a specific time period.

See the Museums, Archives, etc. tab for local image collections from the library and on the Web. Be sure to check out the guide for Finding Images, as well.
