Writing academically about film is an important skill for film and television students, one that can significantly inform their practice and/or provide a foundation for graduate studies and professional development. This skill often involves a combination of active viewing, critical thinking and reading, scholarly research, and analytical writing. This is harder than it might seem. Gocsik, Barsam and Monahan write, "It's precisely our familiarity with film, however, that presents our greatest challenge. Film is so familiar and so prevalent in our lives that we are often lulled into viewing movies passively," (Writing About Movies, 2016, p. 3).
