Popular Resources

Encyclopedias and dictionaries provide introductions to a wide variety of topics. They are excellent places to learn more about a subject area (ex. Respiratory Systems) and may provide inspiration for research topics. Start with one or two of these reference sources, before moving on to books and journal articles.

Books provide comprehensive overviews and discussions on broad topics. Best place to look for math, physics, and chemistry help. Books may also include reports as well as handbooks, textbooks, and reference works (encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc).

Journal articles focus on academic research and experiments, and therefore tend to be on narrow topics that focus on applying theory to practice. They are written for researchers who already have a solid understanding of the subject area.

Although newspapers and magazines are not considered scholarly, they do offer insights into events and/or initiatives that take place around specific topics. They generally discuss topics of interest to the general public, or to specific industries and professions.

If you are looking for a specific newspaper title (ex. Globe and Mail), search our list of E-journals A-Z (a search box can also be found in the Search the Library box on the library homepage).
