Guide for Adult Learners

Learning & studying strategies for mature students

How to Make Friends as an Adult Learner

  • Try not to make assumptions. Do not assume that younger students don’t have responsibilities of their own. Understanding that everyone carries burdens will help lay the foundation for finding common ground
  • Get involved: attending events on campus is a great way to meet people. Getting together with a group of people who share similar interests can be a great way to establish friendships and connections, while enriching the student experience.
  • Be confident and friendly, regardless of specific social goals. Don’t be afraid to join a conversation, ask a question or get involved.
  • Do not let an age gap or preconceived assumptions be a barrier to making meaningful connections, and hopefully, a few friends along the way.
