Food, Noise, & Appropriate Behaviour

Sheridan Library Services provides space, materials, and assistance for students, faculty and staff to pursue their studies in a positive and productive environment. We ask all users to acknowledge and support this basic purpose of the environment by behaving in ways that are appropriate to it: respect for the physical environment (furniture, equipment etc.), and consideration for the needs of others. All members of the Sheridan community are expected to adhere to the Student Code of Conduct at all times.

The consumption of snack food and covered beverages is allowed in both the Library and main room of the Learning Commons.

  • Snack food includes: any cold food that is not odorous (no smells, please), and does not require utensils
  • For specific examples of permitted and not permitted food, please refer to the illustrated signs at the Library and the Learning Commons entrances

In group study rooms, only covered beverages are permitted. No food is allowed in the study rooms.

Please consume hot meals in the seating area located just outside of the Library or other designated areas across campus such as the food courts.

Use of e-cigarettes is prohibited on Sheridan Property.

Please dispose of trash and clean up your work area before you leave.

Each Library Learning Commons offers 3 different zones, with 3 different noise expectations: Collaborative Zone, Quiet Zone, and Silent Zone.

Out of respect for others, all users are expected to:

  • Refrain from making excessive loud noise
  • Use headphones when listening to audio
  • Enjoy board games, and other lively group activities outside of the Commons

For those requiring quiet study space, please locate the quiet study rooms available at Davis (3rd floor of the Commons), Trafalgar and HMC.

Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Security will be contacted if children are left unsupervised.

Users should refrain from leaving their belongings unattended. Library and Learning Commons staff are not responsible for the loss of personal property.

Found items should be returned to Sheridan Security.

Solicitation is not permitted in the Library & Learning Commons.

Users must obtain staff permission to post notices or film in the Commons.

Users should show respect for Learning Commons materials and facilities. Any vandalism or damage to Commons property will be reported to Security.

Users disrupted by behaviour or noise should report incidents to Library and Learning Commons staff.

Library Services staff have the right and responsibility to halt what they consider to be disruptive behaviour. If users do not comply, Security will be contacted and a report will be filed with the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities for further action.
