A task list is a prioritized list of items that need to completed in a specific amount of time. For students, this list will include a mix of academic tasks (e.g. readings, homework, assignments, etc.) and personal tasks (e.g. appointments, errands, etc.).
AI-powered tools can help you break down projects into smaller to-do lists, optimize your workflow by highlighting which tasks you should prioritize first, and offer estimates of how long it might take you to complete each task.
In this section, we'll highlight one AI-powered tool you can start using right now!
Learn how students use task lists to manage projects and assignments and explore key strategies to prioritize tasks, monitor your progress, and manage your time.

Magic ToDo helps you break down projects into smaller, more manageable chunks in addition to breaking down tasks you're not sure how to approach into suggested steps. You also have the option of asking Magic ToDo to give you estimates of how much time you should budget for each task.
Magic ToDo works in a few simple steps:
Describe the project or assignment you want to complete in the search bar. Be as detailed as possible.
This tool allows you to choose a "spiciness" level for your task, which determines the level of detail you need in the step-by-step breakdown of the task. The spiciness level ranges from mild to spicy—mild provides more of an outline while spicy offers more detailed steps.
After entering your project and choosing your spice, click the "Add" button to generate a list of steps to help you finish your project.
Click on the "Break down item" (magic wand icon) button to see a detailed breakdown of each task. Magic ToDo provides steps that are easy to follow and use clear language to help you achieve your goals!
Scroll down to the picture below these boxes for an example prompt about an essay assignment and a sample of the tasks Magic ToDo generated for the student!
Remember, the accuracy of the results will depend on how much detail you add to your project prompt. Any estimations about how much time you need to complete a task are generalized and might not work for you—use your previous experiences with assignments and your knowledge of your working style to make modifications where it's necessary.
Tell Compiler everything you need to do—from projects to personal commitments—in any way that makes sense to you and the tool will turn your brain dump into a simple task list. You can send that simple list over to the Magic ToDo tool to turn your tasks into a more detailed list with time estimates too!

Brain dump: Okay, so I need to finish that lab report for bio by Tuesday, but I haven’t even started the research paper that’s due on Friday for English. Wait, wasn’t there a quiz in econ on Wednesday? Or was it Thursday? Either way, I need to study, and I still have to read like 100 pages of that novel for lit class. Oh, and don’t forget the group project meeting for marketing—when is that again? Wednesday? Thursday? I don’t even know. Also, I promised Jessica I’d help her with her stats homework, and I really need to hit the gym at least twice this week because I’ve been slacking. Speaking of slacking, I haven’t even looked at the problem set for calc, and that’s due on Thursday too—how am I going to fit all this in? Plus, my laundry is piling up, and I need to buy groceries before I run out of food. Should I do laundry tonight or tomorrow? But I also need to call my mom back because she’s going to freak out if I don’t, and my roommate wants to hang out, but when? And wasn’t there some sort of campus event on Friday? I swear there was, but I have that paper due. Ugh, I need coffee. And sleep. Definitely sleep.

Tell Estimator about an upcoming project to get an idea of how much time you'll need to budget to finish it before the deadline. Estimator is also available in the Magic ToDo tool, which can help you break down tasks while also providing estimates of how long it might take to complete each task.
In Estimator, describe your project in as much detail as possible in the prompt box. Select the "spiciness" level for your task, which determines the level of detail you need in the step-by-step breakdown of the task. The spiciness level ranges from mild to spicy—mild provides more of an outline while spicy offers more detailed steps.

Project prompt: I've been assigned a case study presentation for a first-year business college course. I have to analyze a case where a business created an AI chat bot that was giving out false information to customers and make recommendations on what the business could have done differently. My presentation needs to be 15-minutes long and I need to create a slide deck and three discussion questions.
[Estimate button.]
Estimate: 4 to 8 hours.

Prompt: I am a college student who needs to write a 1,500-word paper for my communications class. We're allowed to pick any topic we want, and I want to write about social media influencers and parasocial relationships. I know a little bit about the topic, but I need to have four peer-reviewed sources. The essay is due in three weeks, and I want to book an appointment with a writing tutor before the essay is due.
[Before hitting the blue plus symbol to submit your project details, you can click on a button to the right that features hot pepper emojis—clicking on this button takes you to a slider where you can pick the level of "spice" you need in your to-do list, where spice indicates how much detail you need in your task list. More peppers means you need more detail in your task list; fewer peppers means you need less detail and more of an outline. For this prompt, we've selected three peppers.]
