Self Advocacy

Introduction

What is Self-Advocacy?

Self-advocacy is a means of acting on one's own behalf. Knowing how to advocate increases a person's ability to create options to improve their future.

Self-advocacy is:

  • Voicing your needs and interests
  • Solving your own problems
  • Knowing yourself and being able to say… “This is who I am, this is how I learn, and this is what I need”
  • Maximizing your potential by reflecting on your needs and taking steps to fulfill them
