Creating Weekly Plans

A weekly plan is a schedule that includes all the activities, tasks, and events happening during a given week. A weekly plans focuses on setting and accomplishing short-term goals, which can include things like scheduling the smaller tasks that make up larger assignments or long-term goals.

This type of plan should include essential tasks (e.g. school and work activities, etc.), but it should also include other aspects of your life like your nutritional, physical, social, and self-care goals. At the start of each week, you have the chance to set both your professional and personal goals and strike a balance between the different areas in your life.

Tips for Creating a Weekly Plan

  • Plan for real life: Be realistic about what you can accomplish in a day (e.g. leave time between activities to allow for rest, eating, and travel).
  • Give yourself enough time: Budget at least 1 hour of homework for every hour you spend in class (e.g. a 3-hour class = at least 3 hours of studying).
  • Plan study time: Add blocks of time where you will study or work on assignments, then figure out what work you need to do in each time slot.
  • Plan time for fun: Leave time in your schedule for things that make life worthwhile, like hobbies or time with friends.
  • Don't over commit: Try to avoid filling your schedule with too many activities and tasks. Leave some free time for flexibility—you won't be able to predict unexpected events that might change your schedule.
  • Spread things out: Try to spread out activities without fixed times across the week so you don't have too much happening on days that are already busy.
