Module 8: Linear Equations and Linear Systems

Linear Equations

Types of Representation

Slope-Intercept

The general notation is y = m x + b {"version":"1.1","math":"y=mx+b "}

Where:

  • m {"version":"1.1","math":"m"} is the slope of the line.
  • b {"version":"1.1","math":"b"} is the y-intercept.

Standard

The general notation is a x + b y + c = 0 {"version":"1.1","math":"ax+by+c=0 "}

Where:

  • a , b {"version":"1.1","math":"a,\;b"} are coefficients associated with the x , y {"version":"1.1","math":"x,\;y"} values.
  • c {"version":"1.1","math":"c"} is the constant.

For simplicity, graphing and related mathematics are done using the slope-intercept form as it is the most convenient. However, expect to see and use both forms of representation.
