Module 1: Numbers and Whole Numbers

Order of Operations

As the basis of all math, this will later be applied to differently represented numbers and put into context through word problems. Place values will also come in handy when starting out.

As for what the order is for the operations that need to be performed, please remember the acronym BEDMAS, as it provides to order to which complex equations should be solved.

BEDMAS stands for:

  • Brackets
  • Exponents
  • Multiplication
  • Division
  • Addition
  • Subtraction

As a side note, it doesn’t really matter if multiplication is conducted before division or vice versa. It may be beneficial to simply do whichever first based on how the equation is written. The same thing applies to addition versus subtraction.
