ENGI 53788: Site Assessment & Remediation

Industry Research

Industry research is a vital component of understanding a specific market or industry. Once you have identified the industry sector you will be working with, begin by:

  • Gathering information from a variety of sources, such as industry reports, government statistics, company sites and trade associations.
  • Identify key trends, challenges and opportunities.
  • Evaluate the overall business environment, including key regulations and economic conditions.

Industry research can be both primary and secondary research. Primary research is data gathered by yourself directly from the source (i.e., surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc.). Secondary research is data that has already been collected and is publicly available. Read more at IBISWorld's The Complete Guide to Industry Research.

Use the following resources to get started:

Databases

See the Industry Information Guide for more information on which databases work best for different types of reports, profiles, graphics, etc.

Industry Associations

There is at least one association for almost every industry, product, service or profession. Association web sites often provide industry statistics, reports, trends, links to other resources, and more. To find an association, simply Google industry association Canada. For example, coffee association Canada, or electronics association Canada

Some association examples and links are listed below.
