Faculty Guide to Preventing Unauthorized Use of GenAI

Where Does Artificial Intelligence Fit (or Not) in Each Assessment?

The capabilities of AI models are rapidly advancing. Previous advice for hardening assessments against unauthorized AI use, such as integrating images and diagrams into assessments, or requiring students to analyze video was effective for ChatGPT. Paid versions of ChatGPT (ChatGPT4) can now process images as inputs and even interpret graphs (OpenAI, n.d.). ChatGPT4 can also accept images of math questions and provide answers (OpenAI, n.d.). ChatGPT4 can generate high-quality images from specific prompts (OpenAI, n.d.). This has implications for students working on graphic design, animation or storyboarding types of projects.

Instructors are advised to use GenAI tools to complete assignments themselves before giving them to students. The output from GenAI can be effectively used in class to spark discussions about the strengths and weaknesses of the technology, as well as the potential social risks and harms associated with its use, such as racial bias and misinformation. The following decision tree can help evaluate assignments in the context of GenAI environments (Laubepin, n.d.):
