Summon User Guide

What is Summon?

Summon is a one stop search that allows you to access thousands of different library resources through a single search box.

With Summon, you can:

  • Search across multiple library databases to find books, journals, newspapers, videos, and more.
  • Limit results by date, content type (book, journal, etc.), subject, etc.
  • Limit results to strictly peer-reviewed/scholarly material, and exclude newspapers.
  • Use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), and phrase searching (" ")
  • Generate APA, MLA, or Chicago style references
  • Export to Refworks

Browser Support

Summon supports the following browsers and phones:

  • Firefox 18+
  • Safari 6+
  • Chrome 28+
  • Internet Explorer 9+ **
  • iPhone 2.0+
  • BlackBerry 8500+
  • Android 1.0+

** Please note that IE is not always compatible with Summon, this is a know issue and related to JavaScript

Tips for IE

  • Change browsers
  • Ensure JavaScript is enabled
  • InPrivate browsing
  • Compatibility Mode
  • Search from the advanced search screen rather than from the library website


Not all library databases are accessible through Summon.  Here are a few specialty databases that are not currently compatible:


Summon Quarterly Update – July 26, 2017

Summon will be updating on July 26th, 2017. This update is automatic and should not affect access to our resources.

Update Highlights:

Improved searching

  • Include and exclude options are now more obvious when limiting the search on the results page with the addition of both the include icon and exclude icon in the selection pane
  • English Search Improvements: improved handling of punctuation and special characters, use of synonyms

Preview pane

  • Preview will now open when you hover your cursor over the "preview icon"


  • Permalink Placement Improvement: permalinks are now both in the preview section and as an icon (a small chain) at the top of the result with a tool tip
  • Accessibility improvements: Calendar slide labeling improved, improved screen reader functionality, and fixed unintended scrolling
