Taking Notes Module

Why take notes?

Taking notes is an essential skill that is useful for many reasons. You may have to write tests, midterms and exams where having good notes from lectures, your textbook and any course readings to study from will be a major benefit. You may also be required to write term papers, essays or reports where you will need to consult your sources. These cases will require to take good, careful notes.

General Tips & Tricks

Make your notes your own. Here are some things to try:

  • Create your own shorthand: ppl = people, soc = society, etc.
  • Use your own words: Try to listen to the whole point and then summarize in your own words.
  • Use numbers and indentation to distinguish between major and minor points.
  • Be creative! Use drawings, doodles, arrows – whatever works to help you remember.
