OER Guide

Evaluating OER

Here are some rubrics and guides on evaluating an OER based on quality, relevance and accessibility:

Providing Student Access

With an OER, you may:

  • Post the link. For an open textbook, share the link for the book or a specific chapter in the book
  • Share the downloaded copy. OER in some repositories such as eCampusOntario are available for download in various formats (e.g., PDF, Word, XHTML, Pressbook XML)

If some of your students prefer a printed copy of an open textbook, check with Sheridan's Print Centre (shertrcprint@xerox.com) about their OER printing service. Students may purchase a printed copy at a reasonable price if their professor makes an arrangement with the Print Centre.

Reporting Usage

Most repositories have an online form for educators to share their OER usages. The reporting form for eCampusOntario's Open Library can be found here

If you decide to adopt an OER or adapt it in your own OER, please consider reporting your usage to the repository where you found the resource. Usage statistics help repositories to better understand the kinds of OER that are helpful to educators and students and to demonstrate their impacts to stakeholders. It can help ensure the continual access and growth of OER in these repositories.
