Scholarship of Teaching & Learning: Home

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is a synthesis of teaching, learning, and research in higher education that aims to bring a scholarly lens—the curiosity, the inquiry, the rigor, the disciplinary variety—to what happens in the learning environment.

SoTL involves:

• asking meaningful questions about student learning and about the teaching activities designed to facilitate student learning,
• answering those questions by first making relevant student learning visible as evidence of thinking and learning (or mis-learning), and then systematically analyzing this evidence
• sharing the results of that analysis publicly to invite review and to contribute to the body of knowledge on student learning in a variety of contexts
• aiming to improve student learning by strengthening the practice of teaching (one’s own and others’).

• Literature searching - recommend research databases and other resources, guidance with finding grey literature and provide suggested strategies on searching to help you keep updated in your field
• Obtaining books and articles - request books and articles through interlibrary loan if Sheridan Library does not own material. Visit our InterLibrary Loans page for details.
• Publishing and sharing your research - offer guidance on traditional and open access publishing, self-archiving your work using SOURCE and other repositories, checking the impact factor of journals and your citation statistics
• Support academic integrity and copyright - support using citation styles such as APA and MLA, managing references with bibliographic management tools, and navigating copyright.
