Traditional Knowledge

Traditional knowledge is passed down to each generation of a community through ceremonies, stories, and oral teachings. This knowledge is sometimes called Indigenous Knowledge or Indigenous Ways of Knowing, and is held by Elders or Knowledge Keepers. In some cases, traditional knowledge is shared through websites and books. The following resources offer a good starting place.

NOTE: Sheridan students are encouraged to personally reach out to Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers as part of their research, as long as they are aware and respectful of any protocols on how traditional knowledge can be shared, with whom, and when. Please speak with your professor about your plans. To cite a personal communication from an Elder or Knowledge Keeper, see our Citation Guides.
